Abstract

The present work starts from a reading of Rubem Fonseca's early work, which took place throughout the 1960s. Although the books of this period are not characterized by the "brutalism" that would be attributed to the author in the following decade, it is possible to observe that even at this time the narratives deal with the marginalized and often violent reality of the Brazilian urban context. These narratives, in contrast to the peaceful atmosphere and collective cordiality affirmed by the media during the Military Regime, present the hidden, or at least undesirable, face of the then society, in which the ruling classes, public security institutions, and marginalized individuals converge through the persistent transgression of the values fostered by government discourse. The analysis begins primarily with the short stories "A coleira do cão" and "O caso de F.A.", also utilizing texts that reflect the political moment of the time.
