this article examines the effects of discourse on the cultural and identity-based
subjugation of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon in the early 20th century, as depicted in
Embrace of the Serpent (2015) by Ciro Guerra. The study reveals how the destruction of
Indigenous traditions is tied to the salvationist discourse and the Orbis Christianus doctrine.
The findings underscore the need for a decolonial perspective to analyze the erasure and
resistance of Indigenous peoples against Christianizing narratives. Based on bibliographic
research and film analysis, the study draws on authors such as Casetti & Di Chio (2007), Fanon
(2020), Lugones (2007), Orlandi (2009), Martins de Souza (2005), Quijano (2005) and Pêcheux
(1997), among others.
