Abstract

We propose reflections on the relationship between biography, oral history and culture in the Brazilian Pantanal through the narratives of Lourenço Pereira Leite, a self-declared third-generation traditional professional fisherman, from Brazilian Pantanal.  Lourenço holds traditional knowledge and practices that are part of national and local identity. His life path enables us to comprehend the experiences of subjugated groups and genealogical aspects of indigenous and enslaved origins; to associate cultural practices with territory and engage in debates about social justice; to reflect affections, political circumstances and traumatic memories.  Methodologically, the research on Lourenço's narratives highlights interdisciplinary relationships, based on information about ethnicity, gender, material culture and religiosity.
