Quatro Anarquistas Brasileiros e “de Cor” no Rio de Janeiro do Início do Século 20

Abstract

This article’s main objective is to rescue the story of four Brazilian anarchists and, racially, “colored”. Through these four biographical examples, this work demonstrates that it was not just European immigrant workers who were present and active in the revolutionary movements linked to the national working class: these four “colored” Brazilians – Eustáquio Marinho, Lima Barreto, Domingos Passos and Cândido Costa – they were anarchist militants in their own way, whether through the labor and union movement, or through the dissemination of ideals, criticisms, books, articles, etc. Furthermore, the history of these four libertarians belies the notion of “radicality” and revolutionary action attributed to European immigrant workers and of “passivity”, “acceptance” and “collaboration” attributed to the national working mass.
