Abstract

This work covers, historically, the intellectual insertion of the writer and journalist Joel Silveira, at the end of the 1930s. The clash with the critic Mário de Andrade exposes the characteristics of political disputes in Brazil during the Estado Novo period. In this plot, the emphasis was related to the accusation of the use of “false words”, made by the author of Macunaíma in the context of the publication of the book of short stories Onda Raivosa (1939), by Silveira. Likewise, Silveira's intellectual struggles are an essential part of understanding the beginning of his trajectory and the political projects he proposed in his literary figurations.
