Abstract

The Dominican friar Bartolomé de Las Casas (1484-1566) played a prominent role in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, especially through his work "Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias," originally written in 1552. This work gained circulation in Europe through translations in Dutch, French, English, German, and Latin from the second half of the 16th century. This article aims to identify the key elements that shaped interpretations of the "Brevísima" in the various contexts where it was translated. To achieve this, we will undertake a comparative analysis between the translation by Jacques Miggrode in 1582 and Las Casas' original text. Additionally, we will examine the illustrations that accompanied the friar's text, starting from Theodor de Bry's edition in 1596, seeking to understand the role of imagery in the dissemination of Las Casas' ideas.
