Abstract

Benta Pereira and Maria da Cruz were protagonists of revolts in Portuguese America during the 18th century. The first acted in an uprising in Campos dos Goitacazes, in the captaincy of Paraíba do Sul in 1748 and the second in a sedition in the "sertão das minas", captaincy of Minas Gerais in 1736. This paper seeks to reflect on the relations between historiographical work and archival practices from a gender perspective, based on the case study of the two rebellious women. The goal is to show, through our research experience, how archives can be a means to find women inserted in the political and social life of an era. At the same time it reflects on methodological ways to think about the boundaries between women, archives and rebellions in the colonial period.
