An Overview on the Cultural Context

This paper analyzes the historical factors behind the emergence of modern science in the Russian Empire, focusing on the Academy of Sciences during the 18th and 19th centuries. By adopting an externalist approach, it explores the interplay of religious, political, social, and intellectual elements on the evolution of science and the establishment of the Academy. The study emphasizes the relationship between the State and scientific progress, highlighting Peter the Great's modernization efforts. It also discusses cultural exchanges with the West and the role of fforeign scientists. This paper provides an overview of the cultural context influencing scientific institutionalization in Russia, offering guidance for future research on its development.
