The object of analysis in this article is the Aligarh Movement, which was the base of the movement’s founder and guiding spirit, the influential modernist Sayyid Ahmad Khan (1817-1898), whose project to modernise Muslims was named after a town in the United Provinces that was home to its most important institutions, the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College (later, in 1920, Aligarh Muslim University) and the Muhammadan Educational Conference.
