Abstract

It presents part of the research that sought to know the historical-theoretical- methodological path of undergraduate and graduate courses in Social Work in Rio Grande do Norte. Here, we chose to present a little of the reality of undergraduate and graduate courses in Social Work at public institutions in RN (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte – UFRN and State University of Rio Grande do Norte – UERN). We ask ourselves: How has the process of training social workers in RN been? When did each institution start its activities? How many students on average are/were trained? Do the curriculum guidelines guide the training process in RN institutions? The historical and dialectical materialist conception was used as guidelines. It was qualitative, bibliographical, documentary and field research, using documentary analysis and 3 interviews with professors from these institutions. The results indicate that the teaching of the graduation and postgraduate in Social Work in public institutions, despite all the difficulties, has been given in order to strengthen the PEP. At the same time, the speeches point to work overload and illnesses of the professors in view of the demands of productivity, more essentially, when they are added to the pedagogical and administrative activities of the postgraduate.
